Founder Story

Rig.dev

Meet the founders of Rig.dev, a powerful abstraction layer on top of your existing Kubernetes clusters.

June 11, 2024

Rig.dev was founded by Anders Johnsen and Thor Christensen in 2022, who saw first-hand the differences in the developer experience offered by companies that invest heavily in Platform Engineering and those that don’t.

Based on the learnings and design principles from the Platform Engineering team at Uber, as well as other tech unicorns and enterprises, they built a platform to help ambitious companies provide a better developer experience to their employees.

Rig is a powerful platform and abstraction layer on top of your existing Kubernetes clusters.

Today, most Platform Engineering teams either build a Backstage set-up or craft universal Helm Charts to have an abstraction. Backstage is good, but takes a long time to build, requires a lot of maintenance, and will only help your developers create new services.

But that's not the issue—the hard part is continuously working with your services. Most companies use Helm Charts for this, but that’s only an abstraction at deploy time.

Helm Charts don't help when it comes to continuously observing your services at runtime, providing real-time feedback, and having features such as rollbacks.

Abstraction layers with rich tooling that allows developers to obtain full end-to-end application ownership on Kubernetes—like the one Uber offers engineers internally for Day 2 operations on Kubernetes—aren’t publicly available. Until now.
